Supplies For Medication
We are living in a time of a large aging population. The baby boomers are reaching retirement age and with all the advances in medical technology people are living longer lives. This means that more people are utilizing medical resources than ever before. Along with living longer lives come additional medical conditions and costs. Many of us are facing decisions regarding elderly parents that generations before us were not faced with.
When I was a young girl I remember the first nursing home to open in the small town that was closest to our farm. It was called a retirement center and it was designed to be a place for people to move to when they could no longer live on their farms, or no longer wanted to live in the country. The center had many people that were able to care for themselves. There were areas at the center for people that had medical issues, but the majority of the people could still manage the majority of the tasks for daily living; bathing, dressing and feeding themselves. There were a few medical supplies available, but mainly they were used by the staff.
Today nursing homes are very different. The people that enter them have high care needs. The assisted living programs and senior apartments have been developed to house people that no longer can manage in their home environment. There are also many medical supplies that are available to help a person maintain living on their own for a longer period of time. Have you noticed the number of television advertisements for medical supplies? This type of advertising did not exist just a few short years ago. People want to stay in their own homes longer, but need to have various medical supplies in order to do this.
There are many devices that are available to help with safety issues for seniors. The most dangerous place for most seniors is the bathroom area. It is for the bathroom area that the majority of medical supplies are purchased. Items such as grab bars, raised toilet seats and shower benches are becoming more and more common place in older adult’s homes. No matter how good the medical supplies are, they are not going to help if they are not installed properly. It is important to know what you are doing, or hire the job done so that the medical equipment is properly installed. With the right medical supplies elders can stay in their home environment for a longer period of time. There are also safety devices for them to access help if they need it. The cost of keeping elders in their home longer does not have to be high. For some people it is a matter of purchasing a few items and setting up a call system so that help is available when needed.
