There are many different skin conditions that can occur in people of all ages, but by far the most common is dry, uncomfortable skin. This condition is experienced by million of people in the United States alone. It can be the result of simple improper care, or the symptom of a more serious condition. Either way it is extremely undesirable in that it is uncomfortable, unsightly, and in some cases even painful. People spend fortunes each year trying new products designed to combat dryness, but what most people don’t realize is that there are many things they can do in their daily lives to help alleviate their symptoms. - And in some cases they may even be able to get rid of the problem entirely. Listed here are three simple steps to better skin that are designed to be inexpensive and can be done by virtually anyone.

The first step has to do with water. It does many things in the human body, from acting as a solvent for nutrients, eliminating waste products, keeping us cool, and last but not least, moisturizing our skin. Although this sounds obvious, it is by far the most overlooked step in moisturizing skin. Hardly anyone drinks the amount of water a day they should, and one of the results is dry, cracked skin that can be unsightly and uncomfortable. Your body naturally uses the water to completely hydrate the skin from the inside out. Without doing this it can be very difficult to completely cure yourself of dry skin, and you will most likely find yourself masking the symptoms instead of dealing with the problem directly. How much water do you need to drink per day? Like most things, the answer is different for different people. The average adult should be getting at least eight ounces a day, while one who is constantly engaged in physical activity should get between ten and twelve to replenish water lost through sweat.

Now that you’ve provided your body with enough water to keep your skin fresh, hydrated and healthy, you have to focus on keeping that moisture in. It’s the nature of water to dry up and evaporate away, so you’ll have to take a few steps in order to keep that water from leaving your skin and causing it to dry out. The environment around you can take a toll on your skin’s moisture levels, especially in winter when the air is very dry, so this is an important step. Oddly enough one of the best ways to keep your skin moist is to keep it dry. Right now this may sound strange to you, but it’s the truth. When your skin becomes wet externally, all of that water wants to evaporate away into the air. Unfortunately, it also wants to take the water that’s in your skin with it. This means that running water over your dry skin will actually only worsen your condition. To help it, make sure you dry yourself off very thoroughly whenever you are done bathing or swimming. You’ll keep more water locked down in your skin, and your body won’t have to work so hard to replenish lost amounts.

Finally we come to skin moisturizers. These are the first things that come to people’s minds when they want to rid themselves of dry skin, but you have to keep in mind that while they are effective, they have their place. Skin moisturizers can introduce some moisture into your skin, but it mainly serves as a sort of barrier to prevent moisture from escaping. This is wonderful if you have followed the steps as listed above, but if you haven’t, skin creams and lotions will only give you a temporary relief of your problem. Coupled with a healthy amount of water, however, these topical products can be a great way to protect your skin from the drying elements out there. When choosing a moisturizer go for a trusted brand and, most importantly, a product that contains a few chemicals as possible. There are a few skin moisturizers out there that contain so many chemicals that they actually stress and aggravate the skin, which does not help keep it comfortable or moisturized at all.

Prettier, healthier, more comfortable skin can be achieved without a lot of money or work. These are three basic steps that promote healthy, moist skin at its core, and while they may not be enough to fully solve your problem they will certainly go a long way to making your symptoms much less severe. Those with actual skin conditions may see some relief with these steps, and generally will be more responsive to treatments if their skin is already healthy and moisturized from within. Rejoice knowing that you can have completely and naturally healthy skin with just a little thought and very little money out of your pocket.
