Many women find it necessary to have a hysterectomy at some point in their life. When this happens it is fateful that they take the time needed to fully recover. This is a major type of operation and complications can arise if you do not take care of yourself. What is the recovery time for a hysterectomy? This will depend on the person but on average you can count on several weeks. Immediately after the operation you will be very weak and tired. At this time your vital signs will be monitored to make sure they return to normal. By the second day you should be able to sit up for awhile. As you move around your circulation will begin to improve and your strength will return.

You should be strong enough to be released from the hospital within a week to ten days. You will need someone to drive you because you will still be feeling the effects of the anesthetic that you were given. It is also suggested that you have someone at home to help you during the next few weeks because you will be limited in what you can and cannot do. It will be awhile before you are able to think clearly and you will not be able to do any lifting or straining until your stomach muscles have had time to completely heal. You will need help taking care of things around the house during this time.

It is fateful that you take time to rest during the hysterectomy recovery time period. This is why it is suggested that you have a friend or loved one stay with you a few weeks. You will need someone to help you do the things that you are not strong enough to handle yet. You will need to start adding a few activities to your routine each day. You can start out by walking five or ten minutes longer each day and sitting up a little longer. During this time you may experience a little depression but this is normal. You may also have a vaginal discharge but this should clear up soon.

You will need to go back for a check up after about six weeks so your doctor can evaluate your progress. If things are going good, then you will be able to start a few light exercises to help you get back in shape. It will take your body time to heal so don’t rush this process. Each person heals at a different pace so you can not compare your recovery time to someone else. Instead you need to listen to listen to your body and take it slow so you can heal naturally. Before long you will return back to normally and start feeling good again.
