Tanning Lotion Is The Safest Self-Tanning Product
There is a reason that DHA based tanning lotions are recommended by many health experts. The benefit of this form of sunless tanning, as opposed to other methods of tanning, is more about the limited health risks involved. Since DHA is a sugar that reacts to dead skin cells, there is almost no health risk for anyone who wants to give tanning products a go.
There are minor possible undesired side-effects of using tanning lotions that are related to health concerns. Some particular skin types may experience some minor irritation which can be cured with most home remedies. Because it is only changing the coloration of the dead skin cells it is much safer than trying to change living cells.
The most natural and common way to get a tan is by sun bathing. The problem is that it can be time consuming and it’s not as even a tan as more controlled sunless tanning products can offer. Still the minor inconveniences are little problems compared to the serious health risks prolonged sun exposure can cause.
Too much time in direct sun can cause heat stroke. Over exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays is one of the leading causes of skin cancer. Regular sun bathers and tanning booth goers must regularly check for unusual skin spots that may be signs of skin problems. Tanning booths offer the same risks as sun bathing but since it’s a controlled environment, the risks of over exposure can be mitigated.
Equally dangerous to sun bathing or using a tanning bed are tanning products that require consumption of chemicals. Tanning pills are manufactured pills that contain chemicals used as color additives in foods. However, the FDA only approves these chemicals in small quantities such as for the purpose of food coloring and not in the high concentrations that are used in tanning pills. Known health problems besides damage to the digestive tract and messing up the skin include hepatitis and canthaxanthin retinopathy, which is when yellow deposits form in the eye.
Bronzers on the other hand are very safe. Similar to tanning lotions they don’t go beyond the surface of the skin and do not affect any chemical composition in the body. It works the same as make up and just stains the skin. A simple shower is enough to take off some bronzers.
In the works is a synthetic melanocyte-stimulating hormone that activates the melanin production in your skin to create the pigmentation that occurs naturally from ultraviolet radiation. It’s being developed by a company in Australia.
But in the end, tanning lotions with dihydroxyacetone, or DHA, are recommended by many health organizations for their very limited health risks. No harm in a sugar reacting to change the color of dead skin cells.
